Mirabeau Restoration Continues

Last week, 21 volunteers took the Mirabeau restoration to the next level. Restoration started last fall with a grant from REI. This spring, the Spokane Canoe and Kayak Club (SCKC) took the lead by organizing volunteers and donating funds to hydro-seed the hillside with native grasses.

Before the hydro-seeding could take place, however, winter time debris from the hillside needed to be cleared and carted away. In addition, a drain system was needed to remedy stormwater runoff from the parking area that was causing trail erosion. Volunteers dug the area up, installed a drain system, and recapped the area with gravel to rectify the problem.

To date, over 250 hours of volunteer time has been devoted to this project. Big thanks to Veterans Conservation Corps, AmeriCorps, REI, Spokane Canoe and Kayak Club, Spokane River Forum, Riverside State Park, and the City of Spokane Valley for partnering on this project.

Project highlights now include:

  • 900 lbs of weeds and debris removed from the
    hillside,
  • 135 feet of fence line installed,
  • 7 loads of gravel and boulders placed to restore
    river trail access
  • the kiosk moved, and
  • completed hillside hydro-seeding.

The final step will be installing new signage in the kiosk. Annually, the Forum and our partners will lead volunteers to further maintain and cleanup the area.
